(WASHINGTON, DC) - Representative Steve Knight (R-CA) is leading an effort to install Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (Auto-GCAS) into future models of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

In a letter written to Defense Secretary James Mattis, Rep. Knight notes that the technology is ready for implementation on the F-35 and has already saved lives in the F-16 aircraft. Tested at Edwards Air Force Base, Auto-GCAS 'utilizes precise navigation, aircraft performance, and digital terrain data to automatically maneuver an aircraft to prevent a pending collision with the ground.' In addition, the effort supports the integration of Automatic Air Collision Avoidance technology to form an Integrated Collision Avoidance System for the F-16.

"The F-35 is the future of air power for the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps," said Rep. Knight "Installing this technology into the fleet will ensure the platform has safety standards to match its capabilities in combat. This technology has the potential to save lives and should be a top priority."

Sent on November 8, 2017, the letter was co-signed by Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Representative Ken Calvert (R-CA), and Representative Paul Cook (R-CA).
