(dailynews.com) Caltrans officials Wednesday broke ground on a roadway-rehabilitation project for the 5 Freeway in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The $171 million project will replace and repair pavement on about 16 miles of freeway.

“This section of Interstate 5 has pavement that is more than 50 years old and no longer adequate for current and future traffic loads,” Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty said.

The project will stretch from a half-mile south of the 14 Freeway to 1.7 miles north of Lake Hughes Road. Work will be done primarily at night, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weeknights, with at least one or two lanes of traffic kept open on most nights during the work.

According to Caltrans, more than 1 million vehicles a week are driven along the stretch.

The project is expected to be completed in mid-2019.
