(By Tim Haddock) Canyon High graduate Chris Low wrote a little history for Long Beach State at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Oregon.

Low became the first runner to earn All-America recognition for Long Beach State. He was seventh in the 800 meters final at the NCAA Track and Field Championships.

He also set the school record in the 800.

Low entered the race as the No. 3 seed. He completed the 800 finals race in 1 minute, 48.28 seconds.

Brandon McBride of Mississippi won the 800 meters in 1 minute, 46.26 seconds.

Low, a two-time state champion in the 800 when he was at College of the Canyons, holds the Long Beach State record in the race. He ran the 800 meters in 1 minute, 47.52 seconds in the NCAA West Regional two weeks ago.

The previous Long Beach State record was 1 minute, 49.16 seconds set in 1983.

Soccer

The Santa Clarita Blue Heat shut out the Sedona FC Strikers, 3-0, in a USL W-League game on Saturday.

The Blue Heat women’s soccer team scored all three goals in the first half. The Strikers scored an own goal in the first minute to give the Blue Heat a 1-0 lead.

Celina Minissian scored in the 12th minute to put the Blue Heat up 2-0.

Hannah Sanders knocked in the third goal in the 20th minute.

The Blue Heat improved to 3-3. Their next game is on the road against the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.

The Master’s College men’s soccer team bolstered its roster with a couple new players.

Scott Landon and Kipp Barnes will be on the Mustangs soccer team in the fall.

Landon played at Granada Hills High School and LA Mission College. He also played on the Santa Clarita Storm club team.

Barnes is from Cincinnati and played at the Calvary Christian School.

The Master’s College begins play in the Westminster Kickoff Classic in Utah in August.
