Looking for an exciting job protecting beachgoers along 72 miles of Southern California’s coastline? The Los Angeles County Fire Department is announcing the extension of the filing period for its Ocean Lifeguard Candidate position, an open competitive job opportunity. The filing start date has been extended to Friday, August 29, 2014, 5 p.m., PST.

Candidates will participate in an intensive training program in advanced ocean lifeguarding and emergency medical treatment. The training academy will provide classroom and field training in proper lifesaving techniques and procedures for ocean surveillance, victim recognition, surf entry, surf rescue and beach ordinance.

Selection requirements include a 2014 Swim Certificate verifying the ability to swim 1000 meters. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have a vision of at least 20/30 in each eye without correction, and must meet hearing requirements. A valid California Class “C” Driver License and either a high school diploma or G.E.D certificate are also required. DON’T MISS THE EXAM:  The Ocean Lifeguard Candidate examination will be conducted on Saturday, September 13, 2014.  Applicants will be notified by mail of the location and time to appear for the swim test. The examination will include a 1000-meter ocean swim weighted 70% and an interview conducted on the same day as the ocean swim, weighted 30%; top finishers will continue to the second part of the exam. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on both weighted parts in order to be placed on the eligible list.
