(dailynews.com) A homeless man was charged Thursday with trying to kill a 70-year-old woman walking along a bike path in Santa Clarita.

Colton Ford, 29, pleaded not guilty in a San Fernando courtroom to one count of attempted murder, along with an allegation he inflicted great bodily injury on a victim 70 or older, in the alleged attack Monday.

Ford allegedly grabbed the woman and began to choke her until she became unconscious, prosecutors said.

Cyclists who were riding on the bike path near Creekside Road and Auto Center Drive allegedly saw Ford standing over the woman and proceeded to call police and keep him away from the woman, according to prosecutors.

Ford — who remains jailed on just over $1 million bail — is due back in a San Fernando courtroom Oct. 10. A date is scheduled to be set then for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.

If convicted as charged, Ford could face up to 20 years to life in state prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
