(dailynews.com) A 50-year-old Newhall man was convicted today of first- degree murder for killing his 25-year-old bride in 2015.

Jurors also found Robert George Arvizu, 50, guilty of two counts of assault likely to produce great bodily injury stemming from an attack on a friend the night before his wife’s body was found. Arvizu is set to be sentenced Aug. 15.

Deputies asked to perform a welfare check at the couple’s Newhall home discovered the body of Arvizu’s wife before dawn on May 24, 2015. They arrested Arvizu less than two hours later.

The coroner determined that Courtney Arvizu died of smothering and also had multiple blunt force injuries.

The night before, Arvizu assaulted a friend who gave him a ride home from a party that the defendant attended with his wife.

The couple had been married for about two months.
