(usatoday.com) After the Thanksgiving food coma wears off, many Americans take advantage of the holiday weekend's array of sales. But while big box chain stores may be the talk of the town, some people prefer to frequent small businesses instead.

This holiday shopping event comes right after Black Friday and before Cyber Monday and puts the emphasis on community rather than profits. The event, observed on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, began in 2010 by American Express as a way to promote mom-and-pop shops and small businesses around the country.

To help narrow down the selection of local establishments and small businesses throughout the nation, Nextdoor.com conducted the Neighborhood Favorites survey and found the best neighborhood businesses and a few hidden gems in more than 100,000 locations across the USA.

“It’s important to not forget the value that these local businesses play in our community," Nextdoor CEO Nirav Tolia said. "The best places, like a plumber, a florist or where to get your dog groomed, can’t be Amazon Primed.”

The social network helps members communicate with their neighbors by sharing tips and suggestions for businesses near their homes. Anyone can register on the platform for free. Members had the chance to vote on companies in their area after their address was verified.

“The best recommendations come from actual neighbors who live in the neighborhoods,” Tolia said. “That’s the old-fashioned way, before the Internet. You wouldn’t do a Google search. You would ask your neighbor for a recommendation.”
