Throughout the mid-Atlantic states, from New York to Georgia, and out through the Great Plains, the heat this spring and summer has been relentless, causing clothes, hair and spirits to wilt well before the dog days of August. Arnold Schwarzenegger issues warnings for Californians to beware of sizzling heat, Cal-OSHA is already investigating five worker deaths since June as possibly related to heat exposure. Two deaths occurred Wednesday – the same day that state legislators held a Capitol hearing on whether the state’s regulations are good enough to protect workers from injury and death. (more…)

(From the AP) Temperatures surged around the state Saturday as Southern California continued its rare high-humidity heat wave and state officials investigated a rash of recent farm worker deaths believed tied to the weather. With a sultry, unstable airmass refusing to budge, forecasters predicted close to record temperatures and no break from the heat until Monday. Sunday is expected to be slightly cooler. (more…)

(From the latimes.com) Temperatures climbed well above 100 Thursday in inland areas across Southern California. In Los Angeles County, temperatures reached 106 in Chatsworth, 110 in Acton and 107 in Palmdale, according to the National Weather Service. Ojai in Ventura County also reached 107 degrees. Hemet in Riverside County hit 111 degrees and Lake Elsinore reached 110, the weather service said. The hot weather, coupled with high humidity, is expected to continue through the weekend, the weather service said.

(From the latimes.com) The heat wave that gripped Southern California on Wednesday is expected to last through the weekend, increasing the threat of wildfires and prompting officials to issue heat advisories for inland areas. The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat watch from Thursday morning through Friday evening for valley areas in Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange and Riverside counties. Temperatures there were expected to exceed 100 degrees. (more…)

(From Science Daily) Exceptionally long heat waves and other hot events could become commonplace in the United States in the next 30 years, according to a new study by Stanford University climate scientists. “Using a large suite of climate model experiments, we see a clear emergence of much more intense, hot conditions in the U.S. within the next three decades,” said Noah Diffenbaugh, an assistant professor of environmental Earth system science at Stanford and the lead author of the study. It also arrives with the threat of dangerous conditions in closed cars, where children left alone for even a few minutes can lead to tragedy. Now, a team of researchers at the University of Georgia has developed an easy-to-use table of vehicle temperature changes that may help public officials and media remind the public about the deadly consequences of vehicle-related hyperthermia in children. (From the latimes.com) The National Weather Service has issued a warning for gale-force winds, particularly along mountain passes and parts of Pacific Coast Highway, from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning. Jamie Meier, a meteorologist for the weather service in Oxnard, said areas like Malibu and Pacific Palisades, while the 5 Freeway corridor near the Grapevine and the Antelope Valley could see powerful gusts. (From the AP) Strong and gusty winds are heading to Southern California. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for the mountains of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. The weather service says gusts up to 70 mph are possible on Interstate 5 north of Santa Clarita, with the strongest winds expected Thursday and Thursday night. The high wind warning is expected to remain in effect until 6 a.m. Friday.

(From the AP) California’s fling with a summerlike spring is coming to an end with a series of wintry storms. Los Angeles hit 80 degrees Monday after an equally warm weekend that filled beaches, but the National Weather Service says that by Thursday highs will have dropped 20 to 30 degrees in Southern California. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works has announced that based on forecasted weekend storms, it will close public access to all County roads within the Station Fire burn area at 2 a.m. on Saturday, March 6, instead of 10 p.m. today, Friday, March 5, as previously advised.

(From the AP) A powerful winter storm is heading toward Southern California, bringing a renewed threat of mudslides in burn-area neighborhoods in the foothills north of Los Angeles. The National Weather Service says rain is expected to begin falling along the central coast in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties Friday afternoon. (more…)

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works has announced that based on forecasted weekend storms, it intends to close public access to all County roads within the Station Fire burn area as of tomorrow, Friday, February 19, 2010, at 12:00 noon. Public Works will confirm the road closures tomorrow (Friday) when the latest forecasts have been analyzed. The roads will reopen after the threat of rain has passed and safety inspections of the roadways are completed. (more…)

(From the AP) A storm system rolling into Southern California is expected to bring rain, snow and winds starting Friday. Up to 1 1/2 inches of rain is forecast in the Angeles National Forest burn areas. The National Weather Service says rain is expected to develop over San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties and move into Ventura and Los Angeles counties by Friday night. (more…)
