A little over two years ago (it seems like just yesterday) Assemblyman (then City Councilmember) Cameron Smyth invited me to his kickoff for the run for his first Assembly term at Santa Clarita Republican Headquarters then located in Old Town Newhall. I supported Cameron Smyth in his first unsuccessful run for City Council, and then his two successful runs, and I looked forward to his movement up the political ladder. He would go on to easily capture that open seat against a weak Democratic opponent. (more…)

My youngest son and I secured the opportunity to attend Game Four of the 2008 NBA finals, and witnessed the surreal debacle of the Lakers blowing a 24 point first quarter and 18 point halftime lead to lose to the Celtics by six points and put the Celtics on the cusp of their first NBA championship in 21 years. In the 1970’s that acme of satiric publications, the National Lampoon, produced an iconic, full-page color cartoon. The cartoonist created a tableau portraying a high school or college classroom with students taking an exam. The layout drew one to the right hand corner in the front row where one student obviously stared at the paper of the student to their immediate right, obtaining answers. The cartoonist then drew one’s eyes across the picture and one realized that EVERY student stared at their neighbor’s paper (more…)

In the 1974 movie “Conrack” a young Jon Voight portrayed author Pat Conroy in the loosely autobiographical tale of his early years teaching in a one-room school house amid the grinding poverty and ignorance of the Gullah Islands off the coast of South Carolina. In the course of the (more…)

I confess I watch American Idol for one reason only: I need something to start a casual conversation with our 17 year old daughter. For this reason I also watch “Dancing with the Stars” and the most excellent “So You Think you Can Dance.” (more…)

In the days of City formation one of the primary assertions supporting Cityhood concerned the difficulty and inability of SCV citizens to petition a government 40 plus miles away. Twenty plus years later no one can argue that the City Council does not provide a forum for citizen complaints. In fact, a certain elite corps of citizens (and they know who they are) made complaining about City matters a profession, utilizing their three minutes of unfettered speech at the podium microphone to maximum effect. Remember the color code: Orange for Ender, Yellow for Kellar, Blue for Trautman and Red for Spierer.
My analysis of the 2008 Santa Clarita City Council election detailed last week proved the ultimate winners, Laurie Ender and Bob Kellar, projected regional dominance, Laurie Ender owning everything north of Newhall Ranch Road on the West Side of the City and Saugus, Plum Canyon and everything on the East Side (more…)

In the 2000 City Council election, Cameron Smyth finished first with approximately 5,500 votes and Bob Kellar finished second with approximately 4,850 votes out of a field of 11 candidates. Current Councilmember Marsha McLean finished third about 650 votes behind Kellar, and Diane Trautman finished 650 votes behind McLean. (more…)

Note: For those, like myself, possessing a passion for correct facts, I include the following disclaimer. In this essay I use the name “Cemex” to reference the various promoters of the Soledad Canyon Mining Project that the community came to call the “Cemex Project,” knowing full well the promoters included Transit Mixed, its parent Southdown, and eventually Cemex through its acquisition of Southdown.
Two apocryphal sounding stories surround the Cemex Project, but I know they carry truth. The first involves a community meeting in Canyon Country in the late 1990’s when a Cemex representative told Pauline Harte, (more…)

Tim, Please let me ride in your DeLorean someday. Posted by “Mike” on scvtalk.com April 9, 2008. A substantial slice of the narrow 16% of eligible Santa Claritans that participated in the April 8 election, particularly the 1,000 or so that visit SCVtalk.com daily, gave me the status of seer on the morning of April 9, crediting me with an accurate election prediction. The facts? I did not come out with any precision. My full prediction included the incumbent, (more…)

I remember Dr. Sid Gold. The San Fernando Valley psychiatrist ran against Buck McKeon in the congressional election of 1998. The good doctor went from Democratic house party to Democratic house party in the SCV. Supporters wrote encouraging letters to the editor talking up the good attributes of the good doctor and denigrating the incumbent. Dr. Gold spent much time and energy campaigning for that seat.
