It’s a cold and rainy day. We even had hail earlier. So I thought what a great day to write about energy, specifically wind and solar energy. After all according to “the One” these are the two types of energy that will finally free us of our “addiction to oil”, make us energy independent and stop the flow of our money to countries that use it to undermine our way of life. Every president since Nixon has espoused the same goal and never come close to freeing us of our addiction to oil. (more…)

I am an old fashioned guy. That is why I still subscribe to two newspapers and actually read both. I know the new generation is more into the Internet and getting however little news it does get from that medium. But if all you do is read the “news” off your computer you would have missed a little gem of a letter to the editor that was in Friday’s (January 22) Daily News. (more…)

The health care reform debate rages on and on, and with the death of Senator Kennedy I am sure that it will intensify even more. As with many issues that evoke strong feelings there is a lot of information to try and wade through and understand. (more…)

We are revisiting some vintage commentaries from the past several years this week. Some of those opinion pieces will be slightly update; especially the more controversial ones, but they all have some educational value. Several, like this one originally published in November of 2005 titled “What does Self-Determination really mean?” by resident Simon Weston, have stood the test of time and are still very relevant. (more…)

Question: If you were looking to buy a TV set and found two that you liked, one cost $500 and the other $250 and wanted to make 10 monthly payments wouldn’t you expect to pay less per month for the $250 TV (disregarding taxes and fees) then the $500 TV? (more…)

Tuesdays is the day the Signal runs the “Democratic Voices” column. Local Democrats get the weekly talking points from MoveOn.Org and then write their article. Usually it is a rant against President Bush and how he destroyed this country. Tuesday was Bruce McFarland’s (more…)

Wow, so much has happened in the six weeks or so since “The One” was inaugurated it’s hard to know where to start. Money is usually a good place to begin. After reading about the Obama supporter who was ecstatic when he was elected because he was going (more…)

It’s not a secret that the State of California is in deep financial trouble. Over the next few years the “experts” are predicting a budget that is out of balance by forty two billion dollars (that’s billion with a b). If anyone believes that is will be just forty two billion, I have a bridge I will sell you cheap. (more…)

We are all governed by laws. Indeed we couldn’t function as a society without laws. One of the more interesting laws is the law of unintended consequences i.e. when an action is taken that one thinks is going to result is something good and unintentionally (more…)

I not into writing movie reviews but yesterday my wife and I went to an adult movie and loved it. No it wasn’t that kind of adult movie. We saw “Last Chance Harvey” at the Valencia Cinema and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a movie made like Hollywood used to. (more…)

In an interesting coincidence in Tuesday’s (1/6/09) West Branch Beacon (WRB) and The Signal both featured articles about the homeless in our country. Of the two Chris Sharp in the WRB takes a much more interesting and thought provoking approach. (more…)

Today I was on my computer when I noticed the headline on the homepage, “Bush’s new home has a racist past” and was curious as to what that is all about. Was Bush buying a house where KKK meetings were held? Was David Duke the former owner? Well it’s none of the above. (more…)

This afternoon I had lunch at El Pollo Loco and a good one it was (I highly recommend the Pollo Bowl). If I lived anywhere near West Los Angeles tonight I would have a delicious Mexican dinner at El Coyote. Why? Well it seems that the owners or employees of these establishments dared to contribute to (more…)

Well the election is finally, finally over. It has been literally two years since Hillary and Barack started to campaign and I for one am glad that it has ended. Especially since all I have been reading from the Democrats was that “King” George had stole the election in 2000 and 2004 and was probably going (more…)

In the August 5 Signal, Jonathan Kraut, writing the Democratic Lies, err, Voices column, succeeded in doing something I never thought I would see in my lifetime. He trashed Abraham Lincoln! Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States and generally considered to be (even by liberal academics) as the best president this country has ever had. (more…)

I see that Tim Myers is back writing for the Mighty Signal. After reading his article in the Sunday paper one has to wonder why it wanted him back after a hiatus of almost a year. I know I didn’t miss him but I suppose they needed another liberal point of view. After all it only has six or seven to draw from. (more…)

For almost eight years the loony left (AKA: the Democratic Party) has hammered the American public with three main themes, 1) Bush lied, people died, 2) Bush is stupid and 3) the Bush tax cuts have resulted the biggest deficit in American history thereby (more…)

After reading Eric’s response to my article, “At what income level is one considered rich?,†about who the Democrats consider rich, I was going to do a simple email response but after some thought I decided I needed to say more. (more…)
