Deputies responded to a burglary call at the Christ Lutheran Church. While they were responding to the call for service, they received an update that a witness was detaining a possible suspect. The deputies arrived to find the witness detaining the suspect on the ground. (more…)

August 31, 2010, marks nine years since Deputy Hagop “Jake” Kuredjian paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley.  Jake was shot and killed in the line of duty while assisting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms during the service of a search warrant on Friday, August 31, 2001, in Stevenson Ranch. A resident reported that marijuana was seen growing inside a home in the 25300 block of Via Telino in Valencia. Detectives received the crime tip and began an investigation. They were able to show that the crime tip was credible and there was evidence of marijuana being grown inside the home. Today, a search warrant was served at the home. Inside the home, the garage and three bedrooms were being used to grow marijuana. The home was in poor condition, with a mattress for sleeping laying downstairs in the living room and open trash cans filled with chemicals used to feed the plants upstairs. (more…)

The Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station recently developed and implemented a new system for tracking crime tips.  Analysis of the first 30 days of the new crime tip tracking and investigation system has shown that the new program is working effectively and generating results. Since implementation of the new crime tip program, 46 tips have been received and seven arrests have been made. 24 tips have been reviewed and closed, and 16 tips are actively being worked. The process is automated, provides a follow-up and accountability system, assigns specific sheriff’s personnel to each crime tip, and requires that tips are resolved in a timely manner. (more…)

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is investigating a reported incident of kidnapping and child annoyance in Central Park located at 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road in the Saugus area of the City of Santa Clarita. A Saugus resident, female 14, reported she was walking to meet some friends in Central Park about 8:45 p.m. on Saturday evening.  She was near a group of trees when suddenly a man grabbed her arm and pulled her to one of the trees. It wasn’t luck that resulted in handcuffs being placed on Suspect Eugene Lee Upshaw in upstate New York Thursday night, it was relentless detective work. Wanted for a brutal August 20, 2009 Castaic sexual assault, Suspect Upshaw will face felony charges in Los Angeles County including sexual assault, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, rape by force, sodomy, and other sex crimes. Deputies Dubin and Jones responded to reports of an indecent exposure occurring at Valencia Central Valley Park located at 23600 Block of Carrizo Drive inValencia.  At the park several witnesses pointed out a man who was lying on the grass with his pants down and his body exposed. The witnesses reported that the man had previously been rubbing himself in an indecent manner.  (more…)

On Sunday, August 22, 2010 at approximately 2:30 PM, a Major Inmate Disturbance occurred at a Los Angeles County jail facility, the Pitchess Detention Center – South Facility located at 29330 The Old Road in Castaic.  Over 200 inmates from several barracks suddenly began throwing rocks and other debris at sheriff’s deputies in what appeared to be a coordinated effort. Some of the inmates then began assaulting each another and barricaded themselves within the barracks using picnic tables and bunks. They vandalized the medium-security facility, including breaking the windows. They armed themselves with jail-made weapons including shanks (inmate-made cutting and stabbing weapons) made from glass from the broken windows and broken equipment. Six barracks housing a total of about 400 inmates were affected by the incident. (more…)

(From the latimes.com) Two groups of inmates at the Los Angeles County jail squared off Sunday afternoon in an attack involving 200 men that sent two inmates to the hospital. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Capt. Michael Parker told the Associated Press that a group of inmates attacked another in what appeared to be a coordinated fight at Pitchess jail in Castaic, 50 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The fracas was quickly quelled, he said.

Some inmates sustained minor injuries, authorities said, mainly from breaking windows in an effort to fashion weapons for the fight.

Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Bureau Investigators responded to the 25300 block of Chiquella Lane, Stevenson Ranch, to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting. Chiquella Lane is the short street where the Denny’s, McDonalds, and the Shell station are located in the area affectionately known as Hamburgr Hill.  No deputies were injured. A Tujunga man, MW/40, is in serious condition today after apparently electrocuting himself during an ill-fated attempt to steal copper wire from Southern California Edison power poles. A Santa Clarita Deputy patrolling near Newhall Avenue and the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway just after 6:30 a.m. this morning spotted two men and one of them appeared to be injured. The deputy contacted the men and determined that one of them was in fact seriously injured. The Los Angeles County Fire Department was called in and began treating the man for his injuries. The injured man was transported to a local area hospital for treatment. (more…)

Major crimes or part 1 crimes decreased by 5.75% in the City for the first six months of 2010, according to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department. The City experienced a decrease in all Part 1 crime categories except for forcible rape which increased from 13 to 18 incidents.  Criminal homicide is down 64%; arson has dropped 51%, while aggravated assault dropped 8%; larceny theft dropped 3.3%; robbery is down 2.5% and grand theft auto is down 1.1%. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Parks Bureau conducted a Boating Under the Influence (BUI) detection and enforcement operation at both Castaic and Pyramid Lakes this weekend. The Operation on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at Castaic Lake resulted in 14 boats being contacted. Two arrests were made for Boating Under the Influence; one was arrested for Drunk in Public and one citation issued for Possession of Alcohol in a County Park. (more…)

Deputies Dubin and Jones were patrolling the area of Newhall Avenue and Market Street, Newhall, when they saw a red and white van run a stop sign while turning right.  The deputies conducted a traffic stop and when they contacted the driver of the van, they smelled burnt marijuana.  During a search of the vehicle, Deputies Jones and Dubin located a purse containing a syringe containing what appeared to be methamphetamine.  There were also numerous prescription pills in a metal container and a small amount of marijuana.  The pills appear to be generic forms of Vicodan and Dilaudid. Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Parks Bureau will conduct a Boating Under the Influence (BUI) detection and enforcement operation at both Castaic and Pyramid Lakes this weekend.  This operation is a continuing effort to reduce the number of alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities, along with fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol and drug use at these two lakes.
