The Calgove Corridor association, which was formed to represent the neighborhoods around the proposed development of the Smiser Ranch Property, has sent out a letter to their members and friend encouraging them to learn more about the candidates running for City Council. As they so wisely point out the current City Council has told them “not to worry” about the development right now. (more…)

In a letter sent to The Beacon and other local media outlets, City Council candidate TimBen Boydston has written complaining about incorrect and misleading information coming from the City of Santa Clarita’s City Clerks office. The letter details apparently incorrect information disseminated to the Committee to Elect TimBen Boydston regarding campaign signage permitted in the City. (more…)

It is downright comical to watch the Santa Clarita City Council react to the political winds instead of being proactive. It was just weeks ago that the City Council members were distancing themselves away from Councilman Bob Kellar of the whole illegal immigration issue. The other Council members danced around the immigration issues claiming their hands were tied or that it was someone else responsibility. (more…)

As many of you know I have not been a fan of the so-called local newspaper of record, The Signal, for a number of years. Oh don’t get me wrong, the Signal was a great paper 30 years ago when I first moved into the Santa Clarita Valley. It was the local community newspaper and was quite relevant back then. It was in fact frequently referred to by some as the watchdog of the Valley. (more…)

The Santa Clarita Valley Congress of Republicans (SCVCR) voted March 4 to endorse Mayor Laurene Weste in her re-election bid for Santa Clarita City Council. The decision by the SCVCR Board followed a session during which five council candidates addressed the membership and participated in a question-and-answer period. Weste was the only candidate to receive the two-thirds vote required for endorsement by the SCVCR’s bylaws. (more…)

- House ethics committee confirms probe of allegations against Massa - The House ethics committee confirmed Thursday evening that it is investigating Rep. Eric Massa, a freshman Democrat from New York who announced his retirement from Congress a day earlier. (Wash Post)

- Senate reins in finance reform, works on compromise - The Senate is scaling back President Obama’s plans to reform the financial system, enraging critics who wanted to see the government do a better job protecting consumers and preventing banks from growing too big to fail. (USA Today)

For two reasons, learning in the arts is an indispensable part of American education: 1) children celebrate and participate in their cultural inheritance, and 2) academic and social maturity follow directly from arts education experiences. The Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth category offers funding for projects that help children and youth acquire knowledge and understanding of and skills in the arts. U.S. Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.), the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee, and fifteen of his Republican colleagues on the committee today introduced legislation that would block the Administration from using U.S. military installations as venues to prosecute Khalid Sheikh Mohammed or his 9/11 co-conspirators in civilian courts. Thanks to the blue votes of California and Michigan in the 2008 presidential election, not only did Barack Obama become president but he claimed to have earned a mandate. True to the patterns of other so-called mandates in recent presidential- election years – excluding the true mandates of truly strong Presidents Eisenhower and Reagan – this past year has been mostly wasted in partisan kitsch.
