The Guest Commentary the Al Ferdman wrote last week for The Beacon has generated many comments and pleas from the Canyon Country and valley communities. The controversy stems from the City of Santa Clarita no longer be willing to supply a meeting location for the Canyon Country Advisory Committee (CCAC) which is one of several neighborhood community groups. As many Beacon readers have pointed out, these neighborhood advisory groups were encouraged and set-up by the City and now the City manager is trying to silence them. There are some very thoughtful comments including emails that were sent to various City officials who apparently never responded!  Check it out all the comments at the bottom of Mr. Ferdman’s guest commentary here: Is the City Manager attempting to censor local residents?

In June of 2009, I attended an Army Corp of Engineers meeting held at the Rancho Pico Jr. High School to comment on the Newhall Ranch development. It was a painful meeting to sit through not because of the dry material but because there were a number of individuals from outside of Santa Clarita who drove their SUV’s and Luxury cars here to speak out against the Newhall Ranch Project. The City of Santa Clarita invites local youth to attend the City’s Youth Summit 2009: Respecting Ourselves and Respecting Each Other. The event will be held Wednesday, October 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the City’s Sports Complex Activities Center, and will include interactive activities and informative presentations about teen issues. Due to current weather conditions, the City of Santa Clarita is postponing its local Walk and Bike to School Month events to Wednesday, October 21. Events originally scheduled to occur on Wednesday, October 14 at Rio Vista, North Park and Old Orchard Elementary Schools will now be held on the postponed date. The date of the Pinetree Elementary School Walk and Bike to School event remains unchanged and will also be held on October 21. (more…)

To often the interim elections, like the one coming up on November 3, 2009, have a low voter turn out than those of higher profile elections where a Governor or President is being decided. This year needs to be different; if you care about the future of your community and the value of your home than you should take the Advisory vote very seriously. It is as important, if not more, than any other election in recent memory. (more…)

Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) is set to host a Health Care Town Hall meeting at College of the Canyons – Main Gym for the 25th Congressional District of California on the morning of September 26th.  The Congressman is eager to hear directly from the people in his district and answer questions they may have about current health care plans before Congress and where he stands on the issue. Finally!! Finally the Annexation Fiscal Analysis for West Ranch, Castaic & Tesoro has been delivered. It has been an excruciatingly long wait for the City of Santa Clarita funded report that was suppose to have been completed by last March. But the wait is over as the report was delivered on Friday just in the nick-of-time for the two community meetings that are scheduled for this week. (more…)
