City Formation

At the West Ranch Town Council meeting on Wednesday night there was a brief update on the two community reports that are currently underway. The data coming from various Los Angeles (more…)

For those that are new to the area or who are new to the self-determination discussion I thought it would be useful to supply some history on LAFCO, a state created organization. It became glaringly obvious while watching (more…)

Every so often we go back in our archive and pull out a commentary that we feel is worth running again. “Modern Dating or the Caveman Approach?” is one piece that has stood the test of time and isstill relevant. Dave got a great (more…)

According to Santa Clarita Mayor McLean, self-determination is defined by 2500-3000 persons in a town with a history dating back almost 100 years and a total population of 30,000, deciding to leave that community. As a result these 2500 can make it impossible for those that are left to determine their (more…)

The two community reports that were commissioned this past summer have hit a delay do to an unprecedented situation in the Los Angeles County. There are currently three communities; East Los Angeles, Rowland Heights and West Ranch/Castaic; conducting either an Initial Feasibility Analysis (IFA) or a Comprehensive (more…)

Driving along South Street, where the Los Angeles sprawl meets sprawling Orange County, you enter and leave Cerritos three times. Although the city is confusingly shaped, it is easy to tell where it begins. (more…)

As community leaders on the Santa Clarita Valley’s west side explore how their area should be governed, they have started to move in opposite directions reports the Daily News. Residents in Sunset Pointe and the collective Castaic neighborhoods of Hasley Hills, North Bluff and Live Oak are moving toward annexing to the city of Santa Clarita.

Members of the Castaic Town Council and the West Ranch Town Council - the latter of which serves Stevenson Ranch, Sunset Pointe and Valencia Westridge - have criticized those residents for their annexation move, saying the entire west side of the Santa Clarita Valley should work together as it explores its options. Among those options is forming a new city, they say.

In what appeared to be a full court press to trigger an annexation process of the unincorporated Sunset Pointe area to the City of Santa Clarita, a meeting was held on Saturday morning at the ReMax offices at 25101 The Old Road.

Approximately half of the 25-30 who attended were City of Santa Clarita employees and the Annexation Activist Team. The remainder, about 12-15, were mostly Sunset Pointe residents already committed to annexation. It was apparent that there was little interest in getting the facts first from a recently launched consultant study to address the pros and cons of annexation. (more…)

I am truly amazed at the vitriolic comments that get made towards me when I express the opinion our community deserves the right to have all the information regarding self-determination. Fortunately, it is my nature not to waiver from my conviction that it will be the entire community that will decide on what the future status will be of our community.

Let’s face it, there is absolutely noting wrong with having the altruistic motivation to make sure that ones community has factual information. But you have to wonder why some people don’t want to see the community get educated on the options that are available; annexation, incorporation or remaining in the County possibly as a Community Services District (CSD).

The City of Santa Clarita seems to have evolved in its view of self-determination of the un-incorporated areas on the west side. This in turn has been met with a positive and productive response from the West Ranch and Castaic Town Councils. There will be a lot of progress in the coming months in building on that encouraging and constructive opening of communications.

The process had stagnated for a number of years for various reasons that don’t seem to matter anymore. Now the process is underway; it is moving towards a resolution and the various entities are talking. The outside agitators that are not residents or stakeholders should let their elected representatives do what they are tasked with which is allow for the dynamic and fruitful process to proceed to conclusion. It’s time to trust the process.

What has happened in the past is over with; water under the bridge as they say, it is now time to start to look to the future and all the fantastic possibilities that it holds. The West Ranch community will have concise and thorough information to evaluate its future with and it will allow the residents to make their decision at the ballot box at some future date. All of this will then be put to rest and some of us will go back to just being community volunteers again.
