The California Highway Patrol has given more than 2,500 tickets to drivers who refused to drop the cell phone since a law banning the practice took effect July 1. CHP spokesman Tom Marshall says that compares with about 45,000 speeding tickets written during a normal two-week period. (more…)

A 55-year-old man is dead after crashing his motorcycle on Soledad Canyon Road in an area between Santa Clarita and Palmdale, authorities said. The crash occurred near Agua Dulce Canyon Road at about 10:52 AM on Sunday said California Highway Patrol spokesman Jose Nunez. Nunez said the man was pronounced dead at the scene and that the road was closed for about an hour while investigators collected evidence of the wreck.

A California Highway Patrol officer urged the public today to report suspicious activity that could point to thieves removing copper wiring from lighting along Southland freeways. Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station’s Traffic Safety Division have participated in Operation Lifesaver this morning between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The operation was held in conjunction with personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Transit Services Bureau, the California Highway Patrol, Metrolink, Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroads.
