A Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputy fired his gun Wednesday night while arresting three graffiti vandalism suspects, one of whom appeared to be reaching for a gun, a sheriff’s official said Thursday. The bullet lodged inside the car in which the suspects were riding, but no one was injured and no gun was found inside, spokesman Deputy Darren Harris said.

Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident, which occurred in the 18500 block of Soledad Canyon Road on Wednesday night, Harris said.

Deputies were patrolling in an unmarked car when they spotted a man spray-painting graffiti on a wall alongside the road. As deputies moved closer, a vehicle drove up and stopped and the suspect ran to it and got in, Harris said.
