Flu season extends through March. Each year in the United States, influenza accounts for more than 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths. Vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu. Other ways to stay healthy include washing your hands often, especially after visiting the restroom; covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze; avoiding touching your mouth and nose; and staying home if you are sick or keeping your children at home if they are sick.

Those who should not receive a flu shot without first consulting a doctor include:

  • People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs.
  • People who have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination in the past.
  • People who developed Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) within 6 weeks of getting an influenza vaccine previously.
  • Children less than 6 months of age.

LA County Public Health Centers are also offering free flu vaccines to anyone who requests one, from now through March.
