It wasn’t luck that resulted in handcuffs being placed on Suspect Eugene Lee Upshaw in upstate New York Thursday night, it was relentless detective work. Wanted for a brutal August 20, 2009 Castaic sexual assault, Suspect Upshaw will face felony charges in Los Angeles County including sexual assault, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, rape by force, sodomy, and other sex crimes.

Suspect Upshaw was arrested by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, New York, thanks to the persistent assistance of deputy U.S. Marshals across the United States, and the relentless efforts of Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Detective Dave Campbell.

Detective Campbell said, “There was no way we were going to let the suspect get away with this. We all knew we would never stop until he faced justice.”

A series of small clues, DNA evidence, and skilled detective work by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Detective Campbell helped provide the information needed to help locate the whereabouts of the suspect. The expertise of deputy U.S. Marshals, and rapid assistance by deputies with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the arrest of Suspect Upshaw one year and six days after the assault.

Suspect Upshaw’s bail is set at $10 million. He is awaiting extradition to California.
