Commentary: Frank Ferry supports illegal immigration? Is Marsha McLean being chauffeured? Laurene Weste is selling land to the City?

Does Santa Clarita City Councilman Frank Ferry support illegal immigration? Are his political views and positions being shaped by Cardinal Mahony? Is Frank Ferry representing G&L Realty and not his constituents? Does Councilwoman Marsha McLean get chauffeured around by city staffers? Is Councilwoman Laurene Weste trying to position herself to make a handsome profit by selling some property to the City of Santa Clarita?
I don’t know the full answers to all these questions but I do know that there are a lot of people in the Santa Clarita Valley that are asking these questions and others. That should be a red flag to any registered voter that lives within the Santa Clarita city limits.
There has been a lot of chatter over the last couple of years that some City Council members are being chauffeured around SCV and the region by City staff members. In particular City Councilwoman Marsha McLean has been linked to this potential abuse more often than not.
The Beacon obtained substantial documentation from the City of Santa Clarita on Council member McLean’s travel for the last several years. What struck us immediately was that no information in that considerable stack of documents was redacted, edited or in anyway censored. It was almost as if some City staffers wanted to throw McLean under the bus!
That documentation revealed that there were a lot of staffers who were driving Marsha to and from various meetings and functions. It certainly begged the question, was this simply “carpooling” or was it “chauffeuring” involving City employees.
In reviewing the documents and emails there were a number of phrases that popped out to us as suspect, for instance this selection:
“Robert will pick up Marsha at her home at 8:30 and take her to the meeting”, May 20, 2009; “I assume I am picking her up at her house?”, September 8, 2009; “Ian, are you taking Marsha to mtg wed as she was asking me.”, October 5, 2009; “Mark Hunter will be taking Marsha this time.”, October 12, 2009; “Marsha was asking who was going to drive her down to the Orangeline meeting next week.”, March 31, 2009; and “Debbie will pick you up at your home around 4:30, like normal.”, November 3, 2006.
Like normal!
Wow, that certainly doesn’t appear to be carpooling. No, carpooling usually involves a group of drivers that rotate turns driving and who usually meet at a specific location like a Ride-Share lot or a home. There was neither evidence of that nor references to Marsha ever driving others to a meeting or picking anyone up at their homes. Not once did we see in the emails Marsha McLean offering to drive or pick up a City staff member at their home.
Look, we don’t have an issue with City employees picking up a Council member once in a while to take them to an official function or meeting but when it becomes habitual and expected then that seems to become an abuse of office.
Shifting gears, it appears that Frank Ferry is condoning illegal immigration since he refuses to take a definitive position on the topic. Instead he invoked God at a City Council meeting claiming God does not distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants as a justification, that doesn’t seem to be relevant to the issue at hand; people breaking the immigration laws.
Ferry also claimed to be a full-blooded Republican and recited his Republican credentials during that same City Council meeting. Yet, he appears to be firmly in the camp of his boss, Cardinal Mahony and his view that he would …”attack a House bill that would turn most people and institutions that aid illegal immigrants into felons. Calling it “blameful, vicious” legislation” and he favors “amnesty” for all illegal immigrants. I don’t think that makes Ferry a mainstream Republican!
Is Frank Ferry’s loyalty with Cardinal Mahony or with the residents of the City of Santa Clarita? What if Cardinal Mahony demands that SCV become a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants? Will Frank Ferry support that view? I’m not sure that Ferry actually cares about City residents like he does his own hide!
And then there is Laurene Weste; she owns a piece a property in Newhall and may be positioning it to be sold to the City of Santa Clarita for a handsome profit. Is that proper and above board or would that have an appearance of impropriety and a conflict of interest? Even if she were to recues herself from any vote or involvement it still won’t pass the smell test in my book. How about you?
Are you comfortable with City Council members taking advantage of their elected positions?
At what point will the voters of the City of Santa Clarita wise up and realize that the current Council incumbents have overstayed their welcome and have become too cozy in City Hall. Are you okay with the documented shenanigans and the entitlement attitudes seeping out of the Santa Clarita Council Chambers?
After more than a decade on the City Council, Ferry, Weste and McLean have become stale as day-old toast. The City Council of Santa Clarita needs fresh blood; individuals that will actually put residents first and will serve the City not themselves.
If you are a registered voter in the City please take the time to look into all the candidates that are running for the three City Council seats. This election is not over until the last vote is counted. The last time that I checked this is still a democracy and your vote does count. Make your voice heard and take time to participate in the April City Council election. You can make the difference!

Someone needs to remind Mr Ferry that GOD says in the Bible that we are to obey the laws of the land, well isn’t that a bit contradictory to his actions and the wonderful Cardinal Mahony’s?
Romans 13:1-7, Titus 3:1, 1 Peter 2:13-17, Hebrews 11:13-16
I for one am going in with no votes for any incumbent.

[...] Dave Bossert says documents he requested from City Hall might prove that Councilwoman Marsha McLean is being “chauffeured” around by city staffers. He then pastes in an email conversation between staffers saying they have to pick McLean up from home “like normal.” What’s remarkable, he says, is that none of the documents were redacted in anyway, almost “as if some City staffers wanted to throw McLean under the bus.” He also writes about Ferry and Weste in his post WRB [...]

Dave,
Does it strike you as paradoxical that the City Council election is such a focus on this blog, yet you remain so opposed to annexation?
I’m genuinely curious. It seems inconsistent: it’s obvious that the West Ranch areas are closer to the sphere of influence of the City, more so than the County.
Only those with bullhorns and blogs in Stevenson Ranch can do anything to influence what happens in City Hall. They’re constrained without a vote in the ballot box.
I say this as someone who lives in an unincoporated area that can’t wait for the annexation process to occur for our tract.

I have never been opposed to the concept of annexation in and of itself! I am opposed to the heavy-handed and disrespectful nature the City of Santa Clarita has approached it with some of the west side communities. If they were honorable, trustworthy and principled individuals that west side communities would have been annexed to the city 10 years ago.
But unfortunately that is not the case and I am unwilling to see our community taken from us for nothing and all the excess revenue siphoned off to fix other parts of the valley. At least with the County we get a lot of that revenue reinvested back into our communities even if a portion of it does goes to the County. I would also point out that Supervisor Antonovich and his staff has been great at listening to and responding the needs of the community as a whole!
Personally I would like to see a regime change in the City in hopes that it might set the stage for an annexation that would be fair to not only the City but to the residents of the unincorporated communities being annex.
By the way, the City of Santa Clarita does not have a sphere of influence over the West Ranch communities. Its sphere extends north of the City boundaries but not west of I-5 currently.
That said, I do live in the Santa Clarita Valley and have every right to comment on and shine a light on what goes on in our Valley especially on topical subjects such as local politics. The information in the above commentary is factual and something that you will not find in the so-called “newspaper of local record.”
I appreciate your comment and desire to annex but don’t you want to know upfront how that kind of change will actually affect you? I don’t mean from the sales brochure that the City hands out but the real effect it will have on your home value, your wallet and the overall community.
Thank you,
-Dave

Dave, this is a very interesting comment that you have left regarding your conditions for annexation. Let me try to list them here with a couple of questions and have you check them for accuracy.
1) The City of Santa Clarita needs ‘honorable, trustworthy and principled individuals’ involved in the annexation process. I am assuming that would have to include both City Council members and city staff. Is that right? Who needs to get out, specifically, to meet this condition?
2) Some kind of agreement would have to be reached on allocation and distribution of tax revenues, so that ‘excess revenue [would not be] siphoned off to fix other parts of the valley’. Isn’t excess revenue now being siphoned off to fix other parts of the county? What would be the difference, other than the siphoning going to more local areas that impact you more directly?
3) Regime change at the City. Are you talking about just City Council members and the election, or is this condition more encompassing? Go ahead and name names.
Anything else? Did I miss anything?
Just wondering, since if most, if not all, of these conditions were somehow met and you then became a total supporter of annexation, I would expect that would be pretty big news. It might just provide enough for a clear majority in some election in the future, for instance.
Please be specific, and then let’s work to accomplish it. I think the entire SCV would benefit.

Dave:
Great observations !!
Frank Ferry is a spokespuppet for illegal alien supporter Mahoney. A blind man can see that.
I am hopeful out of this dialogue, THe City Council will adopt E-Verify to the City and all sub contractors.
Mr. Ferry seemes blind in differentiating between ILLEGAL immigration ( which I oppose) and legal immigration ( which I support).
I hope you will join us (rain or shine) at the Save Our State Rally, Saturday 11am-1pm,2/27 in Valencia. Lots of great speakers, including Gaunry, Runner, Kellar, and yours truly.

Way to through around accusations without support Dave. All hot air and no substance. That’s how you roll. While I am no fan of Frank Ferry or several other council members, I find your tactics disgusting and the WORST sort of irresponsible gossip.

CC,
You should re-read the piece again as everything written is substantiated by fact and all of it is public record. Ferry’s comments on illegal immigration, McLean’s travel and Weste’s property and her intentions with it are all documented. That is not irresponsible gossip but actual fact.
Maybe you just don’t like seeing it for what it is; pointing out bad and questionable behavior by the incumbents.
Thank you

Dave,
I’m a neophyte on this issue, but I use the term “sphere of influence” in lower case letters intentionally.
I haven’t seen a lot of discussion about LA County politics on this blog — it’s dominated by what goes on in the City of Santa Clarita.
At least WRB is in the “sphere of influence” of the City of Santa Clarita, no? And if true, then it would be out of touch with West Ranch communities according to your statement above.
