christmastreeThis month, instead of writing a story about Christmas, I thought that I would write about a young man who touched my heart. The story revolves around twelve-year old Jake Olson, a California boy, who will be blind.  When he was just a year old, his parents found out that he had cancerous tumors in his eyes.  He was told that he would not be able to see through his right eye and eventually through his left eye as well.

His one wish, before he lost total use of his eyes, was to be in a huddle with his favorite team, the USC Trojans.

So, the day of the Arizona, USC game that was being played at the Coliseum, young Jake was there on the sidelines, cheering for his team. The team had heard about Jake, and they wanted to make his one wish come true.

During halftime, Jake was interviewed by one of the reporters.  I was so amazed at the courage that this boy showed that it brought tears to my eyes.  When the reporter asked him if he was afraid of what was going to happen to him he said, “No, I’m not.  I’m going to be just fine.  All I care about is my team.”

The excitement that went through his body when he was on the sidelines was remarkable.

Even though his team lost, Jake still had a lot of spirit.  He was told that the Trojans were going to a bowl game in San Francisco on December 26th against Boston College.  He was sure thrilled about that, and even though he wouldn’t be able to be there in person, his spirit will be with the team for the whole game.

I can only say that this boy is to be commended by everyone for the fight that he has in him.  He is not feeling sorry for himself, because he knows that he is a fighter, just like the USC fight song says, “Fight On,” and so will Jake.

After seeing this story, I thanked God for everything that I have, and during this holiday season, I think that we should all do that.

Happy holidays and a happy and above all healthy new year to all of you.
