An unidentified man died this morning when his helicopter crashed along the Santa Clara River near Piru. No one else was injured in the accident. The man, a student pilot flying a two-seater Robinson R-22 chopper, died instantly in the 11:07 a.m. accident, according to Ventura County Fire Department officials who responded to the scene.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board arrived at the accident site Saturday afternoon to investigate the cause reports the Ventura County Star.
The helicopter did not hit anything before crashing, according to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department officials.
The pilot was on a solo flight. He had taken off earlier in the day from Camarillo Airport and was headed up the river. Student pilots flying out of Camarillo sometimes take a flight path up the Santa Clara River as part of their solo cross-country training, landing at Santa Paula, Van Nuys and then back where they started.
A company that offers helicopter training at Camarillo Airport declined to comment on the accident.
A docent at the historic Camulos Ranch museum near the accident site, who was conducting a class at the time, said he heard no noise from the crash and didn’t know anything happened until the fire engines arrived.
