Hiking Club hosts S.A.R. Dog Presentation tomorrow followed by East Canyon Hike
Posted by admin under Community , Local , Nature Comments OffThe Community Hiking Club will host a Search and Rescue Dog presentation this Saturday, March 1st at the East Canyon Picnic/Garden area. Meet at the East Canyon Picnic/Garden area just behind the Pay parking area for a wonderful Search and Rescue demonstration by Ranger Jodi Thomas of the MRCA. Jodi will be accompanied by her dog CABA. She will talk about what to do in an emergency situation. She will also talk about getting lost in the wilderness, and what to do to help rescuers find you. Jodi was part of the rescue and recovery team at the Pentagon following 9/11.
Following the S.A.R. demo, the Club will be hiking in East Canyon. East Canyon is a constant uphill climb to the top. There are some wonderful views of the southern part of the Santa Clarita Valley, and once you reach the top you will be able to spot the Van Norman Dam in the San Fernando Valley. This is not a loop trail, so it is 3 miles back down to the cars. The canyon should be in bloom by this time, so you will be able to enjoy lots of wildflowers and butterflies while you’re on the trail.
Bring water, lunch is optional, snacks. Total distance is 6 miles RT. Please meet at the East Canyon Trail head before 8:30 for an 8:30 departure. Free Parking available on the street. Parking in the MRCA lot is $5.00. For more information contact Dianne at zuliebear@aol.com  Â
