To improve and rehabilitate the roadways of the unincorporated areas of the County, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the acceptance of a $250,000 grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board to rehabilitate the roadways with rubberized asphalt containing crumb rubber from recycled waste tires,  announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

The grant program was designed by the Waste Board to encourage the use of waste tire rubber, and thereby reduce the landfill disposal and the stockpiling of waste tires in California.

The total estimated cost to complete the various rehabilitation projects is $19,600,000; and will be funded by Proposition C Local Return and Road Fund Budgets.

Rubberized asphalt material has been used by Los Angeles County since the early 90’s.  The material is not only a good use of recycled tires, but when mixed into asphalt it provides greater resistance to cracking from the sun, longer pavement life, road noise reduction and reduced maintenance.
