Commentary: Canyon Country Crime is a Real Eye Opener
Posted by admin under Canyon Country , Crime , Dave Bossert [16] CommentsIn recent weeks the Beacon has been regularly posting local crime reports from the Sheriff’s department. What I have noticed is that these reports have been an eye opener in regards to the amount of drug and other crimes in the Canyon Country area.
With the recent Sheriff press release regarding the Sexual Assault suspect being sought in Canyon Country it appears that there are areas over there have a fair bit of crime week in and week out. Now, I realize that I am opening myself up to criticism by singling out Canyon Country but it is obvious from the crime reports. My God, it’s a cornucopia of crime! But I must say the scourge of drugs, especially methamphetamine, appears to be a major issue in parts of Canyon Country. Of course, there is some level of crime everywhere; that’s unavoidable. The West Ranch communities certainly have had some level of crime over the years but it has been well documented that to be very low in relative terms. I have to say though that the crime reports speak for themselves.
Without question there is a disproportionate amount of criminal activity in parts of Canyon Country. It seems that the City of Santa Clarita needs to allocate more police resources into that area to quell that unlawful behavior.
But that would cost money and where would those funds come from? It truly is no wonder why some residents in the City are so vocal on wanting to annex areas on the west side of the Santa Clarita valley. I am pointing this out because again there are underlying motivations to some of these vocal individuals who, for the most part, do not live in the West Ranch communities. As I showed you with Pauline Harte, once I ask questions like; do you live in a West Ranch community? or what is your affiliation with the City of Santa Clarita?; they usually don’t want to answer. That is because those types of questions expose, at least some part, their motives in being so outspoken on getting their hands on what appears to be a revenue loaded area.
In the coming months there may be more individuals popping up out of the wood work screaming for annexation of the west side. My advice to you would be to be patient and wait for the two reports that are being commissioned; the Initial Feasibility Analysis and the Community Governmental Status Options Comparison.
These two reports will yield valuable information that will be a basis for the residents of the un-incorporated areas on the west side of the Santa Clarita Valley to make an informed and educated choice as to how to proceed forward. Whatever that choice is, it will be up to the residents that live in those un-incorporated areas. Question the motives of those that don’t live in our community and whatever you do, keep your car doors locked when driving through Canyon Country!

I was not surprised by those police reports. Canyon Country is a ruff and tumble place filled with desperate people. I’ve heard some refer to it as the hillbilly part of Santa Clarita.
Personally, I would not want to be associated with Canyon Country or other parts of the valley. Many of those areas have their own problems and those communities should work to clean up the crime problems they have. Much of it has to due with poor parenting and uninterested parents.
In stead of meddling with a community like Stevenson Ranch they should look at where they live.
Keep up the good job,
Brian

Dear Brian,
I think there are a lot of hard working and decent people that live in the entire Santa Clarita Valley including Canyon Country. There certainly appears to be a crime problem in Canyon Country but I don’t think it is appropriate to name call or lump together everyone that lives in that community.
The City of Santa Clarita does need to put more Sheriff resources over there to quell this type of activity.
Thank you,
-Dave

Yes you are right! The West side is safer!

Dear Joe Canyon,
As I pointed out in my commentary; “Of course, there is some level of crime everywhere; that’s unavoidable. The West Ranch communities certainly have had some level of crime over the years but it has been well documented that to be very low in relative terms.â€
Thank you for pointing out that one crime last year in Stevenson Ranch has not yet been solved. Please keep your comments coming.

Couple of things, Dave ….
Part of Canyon Country – particularly the area around Jake’s Way – is unincorporated LA County. There are a lot of for-rent apartments in that area, and it has long had a bad reputation. So, it is not just a City problem – it involves the County as well.
The incidents which you have cited are for arrests. Arrest reports are not the same type of statistic as, say, reported burglaries. You are also calling for more deputies. However, maybe you have it all backwards. Maybe the reason there are so many arrests because there is increased enforcement going on, and what we are seeing are the results.
Most of the incidents you have listed are people arrested are for meth possession. Not the same thing as violent crimes. You seem to be shocked that there is meth use going on here. Don’t you know that meth abuse is a problem county-wide, as well as across the country? The problem here is not nearly extensive here as it is in the Inland Empire or Palmdale-Lancaster area.
Most of Canyon Country is not ‘dilapidated & crime-ridden”. You paint an entirely unfair picture. Your remark to “lock your doors when driving through Canyon Country” based primarily on a lot of arrests for meth possession is truly laughable. What does you think is going to happen – someone going to open your door at a stoplight and force you to take meth?
April 2nd, 2007 at 2:12 pm
Dear Chris,
Thank you for your note. First off I would like to apologize to you if I offended you with some of my colorful language such as ‘dilapidated & crime-riddenâ€. Honestly, it should have read ‘dilapidated & crime-ridden areasâ€; which meant that there are some parts of Canyon Country that are in that state.
Yes, I am aware that there is a methamphetamine problem nationwide. I was truly surprised that there was that much of going on in the Santa Clarita Valley as I’ve not seen much mention of it locally. Then again, I generally only read the Daily News unless someone passes along something from the so-called local paper. I also would say that several people I spoke to were a bit surprised as well.
Your assertion; “Maybe the reason there are so many arrests because there is increased enforcement going on, and what we are seeing are the resultsâ€, could very well be the reason for so many mentions in the crime reports. My only thought is that there does not appear to have been any indication of a specific operation to sweep that area.
Sometimes pointing out and acknowledging a problem does make people uncomfortable and angry. My comments were purely to point out something that I felt had not been spoken about much, if at all. I was neither trying to pick on one area over another nor trying to insult anyone. In fact I did say; “Of course, there is some level of crime everywhere; that’s unavoidable. The West Ranch communities certainly have had some level of crime over the years but it has been well documented that to be very low in relative terms.â€
Unfortunately, there are those folks in the community that want pass around rumors and make assumptions about whatever I write. More often than not some people just want to react without really thinking about the questions being raised.
Best regards,
-Dave

Mr Bossert,
I am sorry to hear that you feel so strongly against Canyon Country. It saddens me greatly that people who live in the “West side†have a need to step on anybody who is not one “of them†in order to elevate themselves. I thought we all left that kind of childish behavior back in Kindergarten. Obviously I was wrong!
If the “West side†feels that we “East siders†contaminate their space, maybe all “East siders†along with the rest of Santa Clarita (since Santa Clarita is included in your definition of impure and unclean) should boycott the “West side†businesses and all aspects of you pristine community. Then you could have your “West side†all to yourselves!!!!
Sincerely,
Canyon Country scum

Dear CC Scum,
Obviously you are to embarrassed to use your real name! I think that you may have missed the point of my commentary on crime. If you could step back for a moment and look at some of the crime reports you would see that there are some serious issues that exist. My intention was not to demean you or your community but to expose the crime issue.
Thank you for reading,
-Dave

Dave B.
Since you are such an expert in crime statistics, I would like to extend to you a personal invitation to speak at the April Canyon Country Advisory Committee meeting. I am sure that you could fill the room with a wealth of knowledge and wisdom. That is, if you are not afraid to “lock your doors†and drive over to the George Caravalho Activity Center Banquet Room, 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway on Wednesday April 18 at 7PM. The meeting is open to the public and that includes West Ranch residents.
But do not worry Dave, we will be discussing you and your comments even if you do not attend.
Please RSVP

Dave,
I did not take your comments too personally. There are some problems in Canyon Country that do need to be addressed. I wish that in the future you could tone done some of the wording so that it does not upset so many people.
We do enjoy reading this blog and find it informative. It has been a source for valuable informaion and interesting articles. Some of the comments listed here are not the norm for many in Canyon Country. I read your apology to Chris Austin and think that was big of you yo do.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Ferdman,
I have never purported to be an expert on crime statistics, just as many residents of Canyon Country are not experts on annexation or self-determination.
I appreciate your invitation to attend the April Canyon Country Advisory Committee meeting. Unfortunately I do have another obligation that night but would be happy to meet with you and some of your advisory members at agreeable time leading up to your meeting. Please let me know your available times.
Also, you are welcome to write a commentary for the Beacon with your viewpoints on the crime situation or anything else for that matter. Just email it and I’ll make sure it gets posted.
Thank you for your comments.
Sincerely,
-Dave Bossert

Dave,
Your comments truly sadden me. While you say that you are only reporting on events, your vitriolic wording is what stands out front. Had you just reported on the arrests instead of inserting the cesspool of crime it might have been received differnetly. I do believe you stated things exactly as intended. Are you an adult or a high school student? Are you a parent(I hope not!) This is the same thing as going to a high school sporting event and having the name-calling and trash talking! We wonder why there is so much hate in the world and people can’t get along.
Having raised children, in Canyon Country, we are very aware of the issues in the SANTA CLARITA VALLEY. Yes there is a drug problem…Guess what this is probably the best kept secret up here, Guess what, there is a problem all over the valley. who do you think has the most disposable income here… to hear you talk it would be the west side. Don’t know why there are more arrests on the east side, but I can just about guarantee that it has nothing to do with more usage. Pay a visit to your local schools, not that they are talking, they don’t want their snobbish, squeky clean image tarnished.
WAKE UP

Dear Donna,
You’ve obviously have come late to the party and have missed the vitriolic tirades that have been flung at our community and at me personally for quite some time. Your comments have only added to that with your “name-calling and trash talkingâ€.
I have already stated that some of my comments were more colorful than they should have been. I have apologized for that! What more would you like?
Sincerely,
-Dave Bossert

Canyon Country is the Parolee community. These parolees leak into the west side communities and commit crimes in our neighborhoods.
April 6th, 2007 at 9:26 am
I read the article in the signal this morning and was compelled to write. Let me start off by saying that this is my opinion only and do not reflect that of my employer. I have worked at local Stevenson Ranch fire station for about 10 years now. I have seen the “endings” of the violent crimes that have been committed all over this community. Additionally, I have responded to the shootings, stabbings, rapes, traffic collisions, drug overdoses, and everything in between. My partner and I were the first unit on scene of the shooting involving Jake. I love working in Stevenson Ranch. I love working in Santa Clarita. Everywhere in this valley is crime, accidents, and drivers that do not pull over for us when we are trying to go to an emergency. I have to say that it is only in Stevenson Ranch that I have been given the middle finger and had a complaint filed for making someone pull over to the right when I came behind them with lights and sirens. Those incidents do not change my opinion of Stevenson Ranch or this valley. I have come to the realization long ago, that incidents that have happened both good and bad, represent only individuals, and not communities. I will continue to work in Stevenson Ranch for the next 20 years until I retire. Again, I would like to say again, that this is my commentary only, not my departments. Additionally, in closing, I would like to say that I have been a Canyon Country resident since 1992. This whole valley is a great area..Thank you
